Last Day of Official Volunteership 01/09/2012
Today is our last day of volunteership and it is bittersweet. I am glad to have the semester end and move onto the last part of my senior year but I am sad my time in volunteership will end. Although I will continue to work at U-TOUCH, I am going to miss my organized time at the organization. Working this semester was much different than my work over the summer. While I was in Uganda, I would go into the center everyday and speak with my mentor Deb and other interns about the work I would be doing. Because I am in school while working with U-TOUCH, I wasn't exactly sure how to make the transition from being full time in the office to working completly on my own. I am sure I could have kept better contact with my mentor and sent in my completed work as soon as I completed it; however, I am veyr proud of everything I have created/done and believe that my products can help the organization and hope to send a complete package tonight. My work here at U-TOUCH had been amazing and as cliche as it may be, it changed my life and opened my eyes to new perspectives and new friends. I am not done working with U-TOUCH at all and look forward to my interaction with the organization to help my out look on life and better the lives of others in Uganda. Tonight, I finished the eMentoring flyer. Since I already had the format, pictures and headings finished I just needed to put the main information into it. Starting to write that information was difficult but once I got the ball rolling it was pretty easy to finish. I am glad that it came out the way it did because I think it will be good to send out to people to try and raise awareness about eMentoring. I also think it will go well with my story even though U-TOUCH has moved away from the ning site. After I finished I went and printed copies to give to people and bring to exhibition. 3 hours 6pm-9pm 62 hours completed Interviews and Updating Website 01/08/2012
Yesterday and today, I spent some hours working with the Museum. I did a few more interviews with Ben's grandpa and also did some updates to the website. Because I haven't used the program type thing they use for the website, I had a lot of trouble putting videos onto the website. So, today I just added photos and edited the videos to enhance the sound quality and hopefully Ben will understand the video uploading. Anyway I felt really productive this weekend and am glad to see that I am nearly done with my hours after a lot of work. Sat 4pm-7pm 3 hours Sun 11am-2pm 3 hours 59 hours completed J.A. Cooley Museum 01/03/2012
Today I went to the museum with Ben and took photos of the cars and other collections at the museum. We also interviewed his grandpa about 4-5 specific cars and the phonograms they have in the museum. We had planned to film a vitual tour but thought that showing all of the cars would descrease the chances of people coming in if they could see the cars online, so we just filmed the history and information about a few cars to draw more people into see the rest of the collection. Then we went back to Ben's house to upload the pictures and videos onto the website but he couldn't find the login information. So, while he looked for that I researched other car musuems around the country that he could reach out to and be in communication with and took note of the museums he might be interested in. That was our day because we couldn't find the log in information and the audio Ben's phone took didn't come out well. So we will go back and film with a regular camera or my phone since he has a bad microphone. 7 hours 11am-6pm 53 hours completed eMentoring Poster 01/01/2012
I worked on poster today and placing picutres and writing information to put into it. I worked for about 2 hours on it and made some good progress. 2 hours 9-11pm 46 hours completed Meeting #6 12/28/2011
Today I completed the 6th powerpoint for the VSLA program. I am so glad that this one moved relatively quickly because it was less text heavy and was more interaction from the association than presenting information. After spending countless hours on the largest and most difficult 5th powerpoint I am so relieved that this powerpoint was much easier. Although it did take me time to perfect this powerpoint and add notes for the trainers and materials, I finished quickly and will begin and finish the last powerpoint before the new year. I also wrote a bio for the program guide type thing that U-TOUCH is creating to create an easier access to all U-TOUCH materials for all classes. Overall, good work time. 2 hours 7pm-9pm Tonight I also worked a bit on the video and am worried about how professional it will look. I am pretty good at making videos but compared to some I could definatly be better and hope the whole project comes out well. I started a newsletter/flyer about our eMentoring program because I think that it will complement my story well and also be informative to people who are not familiar with the system. I have gotten many questions about it and I think that having a newsletter type paper to distribute to educate and raise participation would be very helpful. I enjoy making flyers and media things like these and hope they will be very helpful to my organization 3 hours 11pm-2am 43 hours Completed Final Flyer and Delivery 12/27/2011
Today I made the final edits on the flyer I made for the technology drive. I went to Kinkos and made 50 copies. I thought after making the copies to make the flyer more personal I would put a little card about my involvement in the organization and the reason I personally am doing this drive. I then printed those and paper cliped them together. I then went around to about 30-40 houses of neighbors, family friends and other members of Kensington to distribute my flyer. The day seemed to go by fast but every time I checked the time a lot of time had gone by. Although it took a long time I really enjoyed making the products and how they came out towards the end. I can only hope that people will donate old technology and that I can hand out more flyers to friends, schools, and businesses outside of Kensington to maximize the amount of donations. 6 hours 11am-5pm 39 hours Completed J.A. Cooley Museum 12/23/2011
Today, I did my first day of work with the J.A. Cooley Museum, which is a museum in North Park with over two dozen antique cars. I spent a long time at the museum with Ben taking pictures of each the different collections in the museum. They have phonograms, typewriters, trains, several pianos, jars/jugs and war posters. We took pictures of the these things and posted them on the website to show some of the stuff that is in the museum other than cars. Additionally, I helped Ben clean up around the museum to make it less cluttered. It was a good day and nice to do some hands on work rather than have it all on the computer. Hopefully our work will help bring in more customers. 6 hours 10am-4pm 33 hours completed Flyer and Powerpoint 12/22/2011
In the last few days, I have been stuck at home due to my wisdom teeth surgery so I have been working on a flyer for a technology drive and working the powerpoints. The powerpoint is coming through slowly because I have to add notes for the instructor as well as check the fonts and fix bullets, add/delete slides. It isn't the most challenging task but is very tedious since the powerpoints are so long. The flyer was very frustrating since I don't have photoshop I had to use several different applications to make my final products but I think it came out amazing and hopefully will be very effective after the holidays people will have old things to donate. Below is my flyer that I will be giving out next week. 6 hours (Mon/Tues/Wed) 27 hours Completed
Full Volunteership Day 12/07/2011
Today we had a full day to work on our volunteership work. I found this time very helpful but wish that I could have gotten more done because my computer was very glitchy and was very had to work with. I spend a significant part of my day working on reformatting the powerpoint #5 and working to find videos clips that I took over the summer to make a DVD to give to donors. Most of today I was very frustrated with my computer and the fact that I did not have any interviews that I had taken over summer. Overall, I worked on the PowerPoints and tried to find a way to get the videos that I needed. 8 hours 10am-6pm 21 hours Completed | AuthorMy name is Holly West.
